My test tracker

The downloadable chart can be used to record test results from your healthcare provider so that together you can track your progress toward your treatment goals. Any combination of these tests may be used to track how you may or may not be responding to treatment:

Hematologic testing is a simple blood test to see whether your white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), and platelets have returned to normal levels.

Cytogenetic testing is done one of two ways:

  • Karyotyping, which is done on bone marrow cells and WBCs to look at a small number of cells (about 20) to see whether they still contain the Ph chromosome.
  • FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization), which can be done on either blood or bone marrow cells, looks for abnormal cells that contain the BCR-ABL gene, which is located on the Ph chromosome. This test can find one abnormal cell out of a background of up to 500 normal cells.

Molecular testing-RT-PCR (Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a test of the blood or bone marrow that can detect one cell containing BCR-ABL protein among one million normal cells.

These tests are performed on a specific timetable developed by your doctor. For instance hematologic, cytogenetic (karyotyping/FISH) and molecular (RT-PCR) testing is done at diagnosis. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, at 3 months your doctor will check to see whether white blood cell, red blood cell, and platelet counts have returned to normal. Cytogenetic evaluation is recommended at 6, 12, and 18 months following treatment. If a complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) is achieved at any of the earlier timepoints, then conventional cytogenetics do not need to be repeated, or may be performed as clinically indicated. PCR is recommended every three months when a patient is responding to therapy, and every 3 to 6 months when a CCyR is reached.

Feel free to take this tracker to your doctor with each visit. As with all your tests, be sure communicate with your doctor or other healthcare professional any questions about your results.
